Dr A S Bawa
Defence Food Research Laboratory, Mysore

He has been working as Director, Defence Food Research Laboratory, Mysore since 14th Dec 2000. After joining DFRL, he is steering the Laboratory with the mission of designing and developing safe, nutritious and quality food to meet the needs of Services and in dissipating state-of-the-art food technologies to the civil population. His dynamic leadership at DFRL had led to the development of light weight convenient, pack rations for Army, Navy, Air Force and paramilitary forces which do not require any elaborate cooking or preparation at the consumer's end. Through his untiring efforts, DFRL had developed a wide variety of food products of Indian dietary matching the mainframe palate tastes of the country. As result, today, DFRL caters to the strategic operational requirements of our Services and provide logistic support to the Armed Forces in the area of food supplies. Under his leadership, a number of technologies viz. self contained self heating system, structured fruits, shelf stable ready to eat meat products, neera preservation, meat quality testing kits, zero energy coolers and antifreeze containers for fresh produce, memory enhancing nutraceuticals, medicinal foods, preserved paneer, frozen foods, ready-to-eat retort pouch processed foods, tender coconut water preservation, freeze drying of fruit juices, hurdle technology preservation of fruits, development of frozen foods, high pressure processed foods, development of photodegradable plastics, etc. were developed. His interaction with national and International academia, International Defence Science Centres and Non- Governmental Organizations has helped DFRL being reckoned as the leader in the field of Defence food technologies.

He has received many awards for his outstanding contributions to the field of food science and technology. He is a recipient of N.N. Mohan Memorial Award in 1986, 1999, 2007 and M/s Gardner's Award in 1989. A Second prize, Raksha Khadya Vigyan Patrika for the year 2003-04 was presented to him by the Defence Minister. He has been awarded President's "Special Award" 2002 by the All India Food Processor's Association for his contributions to Food Processing Industry. The Prime Minister presented DRDO Award to him for "Performance Excellence" carrying a citation and cash prize of rupees ten lakhs for the year 2004. He has been awarded SK Mitra Memorial Award 2007 instituted by AIFPA for outstanding contribution to Food Processing Industry, Prof. V Subramanian Industrial Achievement Award 2006 for empowering the Food Professional and Laljee Godhoo Smarak Nidhi Award-2006 & 2007 by AFST (I). He is also a recipient of Dr. JS Pruthi Award for development of new products/process/machinery 2007 from All India Food Processor's Association. He is also a recipient of Dr. Y. Subbarao Memorial Award 2008 from Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists. He was awarded Fellow Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) for the year 2001 and Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, 2009. Recently he has received Defence Technology spin-off award - 2010.

He has more than two hundred and twenty publications and one hundred and fifty presentations in National and International journals, six book reviews, ten book chapters including two each in Encyclopaedia in Food Science, Technology and Nutrition published by Academic Press, UK and "Handbook of Fruits and Fruit processing" published by Blackwell publishers.
