Susan K. Neely is president and chief executive officer of the American Beverage Association (ABA). The
association is the leading policy and public education advocate for the non-alcoholic beverage industry that
employs more than 208,000 people across the country with a direct economic impact of $178.5 billion.
Prior to joining ABA, Neely was one of the architects of the nation's first Department of Homeland Security,
where she served in both the White House and then in the department as Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs.
Ms. Neely's professional background also encompasses government service as a senior advisor to 2 members
of the U.S. Congress as well as a senior counselor to the Governor of Iowa. She has had significant health care
policy and advocacy experience, including executive positions with the Health Insurance Association of
America (HIAA) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
A native of Iowa, Ms. Neely holds an undergraduate degree in journalism and French civilization from the
University of Iowa and a master's degree in public administration from Drake University. She has been elected
the first woman president of both the 90-year-old Washington Rotary Club and the 100-year-old University Club
of Washington, D.C. In December, she will be the first woman to receive the Global Citizen of the Year award
from the Whitehead School of International Relations.
Ms. Neely currently serves as a director on the Boards of the ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership,
the National Presbyterian School Board of Trustees and the Global Child Nutrition Foundation. She is the
mother of two children, Eve (age 14) and Ben (age 11).
